Traditions and Customs
In the United Statesmost people celebrate their birthdays on the day of the month when they were born. Birthdays are celebrated with family and friends. Invitations are sent for a party. A birthday cake with candles is served. The number of candles represents the age of the birthday person. The candles are lighted. The person makes a wish and then blows out the candles in one breath so the wish will come true. People sing “Happy Birthday” and wish the person health and long life.
It is traditional to bring or send birthday cards and gifts to the birthday person. Many people send flowers. Other gifts can be clothing, books, records or perfumes. There is a birthstone and a flower for each month of the year. These can also be appropriate gifts.
Parties for children are usually held at home. At children’s parties, children wear birthday hats and get souvenirs from the birthday child. Sometimes birthdays are also celebrated at school in the classroom with classroom with classmates. A parent may bring refreshments for the whole class; some teachers ask for juice and cakes, others for fruit or vegetables. Some parties are catered at restaurants. They reserve a special room for the birthday group and supply the refreshments and decorations. Balloons are especially popular at birthday parties.
Some birthdays are special. In some families, girls have a special celebration for the sixteenth birthday, called “sweet sixteen”. The eighteenth birthday is important because it is the legal voting age.
Some people want to celebrate the birthday of a relative or friend with a “surprise party”. They organize the party, but they keep it a secret and the birthday person does not find out about it. When the person comes to the party everyone shouts “SURPRISE!”
It is nice to remember the birthday of family and friends. One way to show this is by sending a birthday card, making a telephone call, or sending flowers. Some people make contributions to charities in the name of the birthday person.

Halloween — скачать
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating , wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.
The colours black and orange are associated with the celebrations, perhaps because of the darkness of night and the colour of fire, autumn leaves, or pumpkins.
Trick-or-treating and guising
Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, «Trick or treat?» The word «trick» refers to a (mostly idle) threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. In some parts ofIreland andScotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of show, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, in order to earn their treats.
Halloween costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. They are said to be used to scare off demons. Costumes are also based on themes other than traditional horror, such as those of characters from television shows, movies, and other pop culture icons.
Because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, candy apples (known as toffee apples outside North America), caramel or taffy apples are a common Halloween treat made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts.
St Valentine — скачать
St Valentine’s Day.
It is a very sentimental unofficial holiday, which is celebrated on the 14th February by those who believe in love and friendship. Boys and girls, husbands and wives, just friends send nice cards to each other with warm greetings on the day. No one can trace origin of this European tradition, but the legend tells us a story of an Italian monk Valentine who helped young people to marry breaching thus the ruler’s law. St Valentine was executed but people still remember him and celebrate this saint’s day as a day of love.
The best presents are small trifles, chocolates and greeting cards. The words are simple and touching like these ones:
I’ll be your sweetheart
If you will be mine,
All of my life
I’ll be your Valentine.
Valentine’s Day Song.
(can be sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)
You’re a special friend of mine,
Friend of mine, friend of mine,
You’re a special friend of mine,
Be my Valentine.
5 Little Valentines
Five little valentines were having a race
The first little valentine was frilly with lace.
The second little valentine had a funny face.
The third little valentine said, «I love you».
